In September 2018, PIM International reported that bimetallic (2c-mim) products have been put into commercial production. The technique involves injecting two different feedstock into a mold and then sintering it to form a strongly bonded bimetallic product.

The 2c-mim components technology is now being on mass production of variable geometry turbochargers by Schunk Sintermetalltechnik GmbH. The pin requires good welding performance, while the working surface also requires wear resistance and corrosion resistance, fork parts also require high corrosion resistance, and pin contact position requires wear resistance. The final solution is to use bimetal injection molding to make pin parts with a weldable stainless steel core and a wear-resistant cobalt alloy outer layer

There are a series of technical problems to be overcome before mass production of above products. Different combinations of binders and powders need to be tested on feedstock, different channels need to be opened for the two feedstock on mold, injection cycle time must be increased, and suitable co-sintering scheme must be found for the two alloys, so as to ensure the densification of parts and the same shrinkage rate of two materials.

In the future, bimetal injection molding can also develop different material combinations such as soft magnetic/wear resistance, soft magnetic/non-magnetic, weldable/wear resistance, wear resistance/heat resistance, low-cost materials/high-cost materials and metal/ceramic.
