Both stainless steel 304 and stainless steel 316 belong to 18Cr-9Ni, which are typical representative of austenitic stainless steel Cr-Ni 18-8. Stainless steel 316 rise Ni content, reducing Cr content and adding 2 % to 3% Mo(molybdenum). Because of adding of Mo, stainless steel 316 has better corrosion resistance than stainless steel 304 especially under high temperature environment. It is suitable for chemical industry, and water environment. So engineers usually select stainless steel 316 for parts used in high temperature.

As a wide range of steels, stainless steel 304(or 06cr19ni10) has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, strength and mechanical properties at low temperature. It is not magnetic. The usage temperature is between 196 ℃ and 800 ℃. Stainless steel 304 is widely used in household articles (class 1 and 2 tableware, kitchen utensils, water heater, etc.), medical instruments, building materials, petroleum, chemical equipment, food industry, and atomic energy industry)
Stainless steel 316(or 06cr17ni12mo2) added Mo, so its corrosion resistance in high temperature is very good. It can be used in critical conditions and has excellent work hardening (no-magnetic). Stainless steel 316 is commonly used in water equipment, chemical, dyestuff, papermaking, oxalic acid, fertilizer, food, industrial equipment, vessel, pipeline, and coastal areas.
