Metal injection molding was first traced to the powder injection molding of ceramic spark plugs that began in the 1920s. In the following decades, powder injection molding was mainly focused on ceramic injection molding. Since year 1979, Parmatech which grouped by Wiech team won two awards of metal injection molding products, and Wiech and Rivers obtained patents at the time, powder injection molding began to turn to metal injection molding.


In the past, due to lack of appropriate powder and high raw material price, imperfect knowledge platform, immature technology, short time for people to understand and accept the market, too long production cycle (including mold manufacturing), and insufficient investment, the development and application of metal injection molding were relatively slow.


In order to solve the difficulties of metal injection molding(MIM) technology and promote the practical application of MIM technology, in the mid-1980s, the United States developed a high-level powder industry plan, which covered 18 topics related to injection molding. Subsequently, Japan, Germany,China and other countries also actively carried out research and development of MIM.


In 1980, Wiech established Witec. In 1982, Brunswick entered the MIM industry and acquired Witec. Later, it gradually registered Omark Industries, Remington Army, Rocky Dental and other subsidiaries. In 1986, Japan's Nippon Seison introduced the Wiech process. In 1990, Israel Metalor2000 introduced the Wiech process technology from Parmatech and established the metal injection molding manufacturer line.


With the deepening of MIM research and the continuous development of new binders, powder technology and debinding technology, industrialization has been realized in the early 1990s.After more than 20 years of efforts, MIM has become a new type of near-net forming technology that is developing rapidly and most promising in the international powder metallurgy field. It has been hailed as one of the "hottest metal parts forming technologies in the world".
