Types of heat treatment of MIM products

MIM products can be heat treated to improve product performance to meet performance or appearance requirements.

1. Annealing

Annealing is a process of slowly heating a metal product to a certain temperature, holding it for sufficient time, and then cooling it at a suitable rate. The purpose is to reduce hardness, improve machinability, eliminate residual stress, stabilize size, reduce deformation and residual marks, refine grain, adjust microstructure and eliminate microstructure defects.

2. Normalizing

Normalizing is a heat treatment process that heats metal products to Ac3 or Acm above 40~60℃, keeps them warm for a period of time, and then takes them out of furnace and cool down by spraying water, atomizing or blowing in air. The purpose of this method is to refine grain and distribute carbide evenly, but to reduce internal stress and hardness of material.

3. Quenching

Quenching is a heat treatment process of heating to critical temperature Ac3 or above, holding for a period of time, making it all or part of austenitization, and then rapidly cooling to below Ms (or near Ms) at a cooling rate greater than critical cooling rate for martensite (or bainite) transformation. Aluminum alloy, copper alloy, titanium alloy, tempered glass and other materials solid solution treatment or heat treatment process with rapid cooling process usually also called quenching.

4. Tempering

A heat treatment process in which a hardened metal product is reheated to an appropriate temperature below critical temperature and cooled in air or water, oil, etc after being held for a period of time. Or after quenching products to appropriate temperature, insulation for a number of times, and then slowly or rapidly cooling. Generally used to reduce or eliminate internal stress of quenched products, or reduce its hardness and strength, to improve its ductility or toughness.

5. High tempering

High tempering refers to heating metal products to 500~650℃ after quenching, generally heating to a certain temperature of PSK line (critical point Ac1), and cooling at an appropriate rate after a period of insulation. The mixture of ferrite and fine - grained cementite is obtained by high temperature tempering. With excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, it is mainly used for tempering structural parts after quenching, such as connecting rod, bolt, gear and shaft.


6. Quenching and tempering (quenching + high temperature tempering = quenching and tempering)

Most metal products work under large dynamic load, they bear stretching, compression, bending, torsion or shear, some surfaces required certain wear resistance and so on. In short, metal products work under various composite stresses. This kind of metal products are mainly structural parts of various machines and mechanisms, such as shafts, connecting rods, bolts, gears and so on. This requires that all parts should have excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, high strength and high toughness of appropriate combination, to ensure product long-term smooth work.


7. Stabilization treatment

Any heat treatment process that stabilizes product organization, eliminates residual stresses, and maintains working shapes and sizes within defined ranges.

8. Aging treatment

Aging treatment can be divided into natural aging and artificial aging. Natural aging is to place product in open space for more than half a year, make it slowly deformation, so as to eliminate or reduce residual stress. Artificial aging is to heat product to 550~650℃ for stress removal annealing, which saves time compared with natural aging, and completely removes residual stress, but not completely releases stress compared with natural aging.
