Easy Classification of Metal Injection Molding Stainless Steel Material

Metal injection molding used types of material, stainless steel is the most common one.  Stainless steel is a kind of corrosion resistant high alloy steel. It has beautiful surface, and no need to do plating and painting. So a lot of machinery factories often do not make any paint to show they are stainless steel. But the black steel (black steel is the name of ordinary steel) must be treated against rust.

Stainless steel can be roughly divided into three categories: 200 series, 300 series and 400 series.

300 series is the most common stainless steel. The 200 series and the 400 series are, to some extent, substitutes for the 300 series. Strictly speaking, the 400 series cannot call stainless steel, but stainless iron, because there is no nickel in it, it can be attracted by a magnet.

There is no nickel in 200 series and 300 series. So they are magnetic free. Iron will not absorb.

304 is the most common variety in the 300 series. So its price change can generally judge the price trend of whole stainless steel.

The 200 series contains little nickel, the 400 series does not contain nickel, and the 300 series contains the most nickel, so the 300 series is the most affected by nickel price.

300 series can be divided into 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321L, 309S and 310S and so on. The basis of distinction is the different content of various metal elements. Stainless steel with different contents has different characteristics.

The difference between 304 and 304L lies in the difference in carbon (C) content. The one with L means low carbon, also known as low carbon. Same does the difference between 316 and 316L.

In current metal injection molding, only material 300series and 400series are available. 200 series are at profiles in majority

304: a widely used steel, good corrosion and heat resistance, good low temperature strength , and good mechanical property, good stamping, bending and other thermal processing, no heat treatment, no magnetic, use temperatures between minus193 and 800 degrees.

304L: a low-carbon 304 steel, its corrosion resistance is about the same as 304 under normal conditions. However, after welding and stress release, it has good intergranular corrosion resistance and can maintain good corrosion resistance even without heat treatment. It is generally used at 400 degrees

316: add MO element, so its corrosion resistance, resistance to atmospheric corrosion and high temperature strength performance is particularly good, can be used in harsh conditions, suitable for use under 900 degrees, no magnetic.
