Metal injection molding is a technical method of forming metal product by de-binding and sintering after injection molding a green part. Therefore, metal injection molding selects metal powders of different compositions, and properties of formed products are also different, 17-4PH metal powder is a relatively common material.

17-4PH stainless steel, martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel, grade: 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb, chemical composition: carbon C: ≤ 0.07, manganese Mn: ≤ 1.00, silicon Si: ≤ 1.00, chromium Cr: 15.5 ~ 17.5, nickel Ni2: 3.0 ~ 5.0, phosphorus P: ≤ 0.04, sulfur S: ≤ 0.03, copper Cu: 3.0 ~ 5.0, Nb + Ta: 0.15 ~ 0.45.

17-4PH mechanical properties:

1. High tensile strength, good yield strength and elongation;

2. Strong magnetic, can remove magnetic properties;

3. It has high strength, hardness and corrosion resistance;

4. Metallographic structure is characterized by precipitation hardening;

17-4PH is a precipitation hardened martensitic stainless steel consisting of copper, niobium and tantalum. It has low carbon content, good corrosion resistance and weldability. The heat treatment process is simple and machinability is good, but It is difficult to meet cryogenic processing. Since 17-4PH is mainly used for its mechanical properties after heat treatment, it can reach a compressive strength of up to 1100-1300 MPa. This grade cannot be used above 300 ° C (570F) or very low temperature. Atmospheric and dilute acids or salts have good corrosion resistance and have same corrosion resistance as 304 and 430.

17-4PH heat treatment specification:

1) Product is rapidly cooled by solid solution 1020~1060°C, and hardness can reach 23∽25 HRC (solid solution is used to reduce strength of product to eliminate internal stress);

2) After aging treatment at 480 °C, air cooling at 470 ~ 490 °C, hardness can reach ≥ 40HRC (aging is to increase product strength, hardness.);

3) After aging treatment at 550 ° C, air cooling at 540 ~ 560 ° C, hardness can reach ≥ 35HRC;

4) After aging treatment at 580 °C, air cooling at 570 ~ 590 ° C, hardness can reach ≥ 31HRC;

5) After aging treatment at 620 °C, air cooling at 610-630 °C, hardness can reach ≥29HRC.


17-4PH application areas:

Used in manufacture of high corrosion resistance and high strength parts such as bearings and turbine parts; offshore platforms, helicopter decks, other platforms; food industry, pulp and paper industry, aerospace (turbine blades), mechanical parts; nuclear waste barrels .

17-4PH with good strength, hardness and wear resistance; but 316L corrosion resistance is stronger than 17-4PH.
